ASL Media Awareness

In a previous blog we learned why sign language is the choice communication method for deaf and hearing individuals alike. While sign language has been around for thousands of years, only until recently have we become more aware of the Deaf community and of American Sign Language. Let’s discuss what ASL awareness is, and how and when we can appreciate this vast and wonderful community.

In recent years we have seen the inclusion of the Deaf community in television and screen. Movies such as CODA, Sound of Metal and the Quiet Place franchise and television shows such as Switched at Birth and Only Murderers in the Building all utilize American Sign Language and, more importantly, include Deaf actors. By including Deaf actors in this medium, ASL is promoted giving more understanding of the Deaf community.

The promotion of the Deaf community doesn’t stop there. Thanks to inclusion efforts in sports, more and more Deaf athletes are given access to the same spotlight that able bodied athletes have had for years. Deaf athletes like Matt Hamill (Wrestling/MMA), Derrick Coleman (NFL), Jim Kyte (NHL), and Lou Ferrigno (bodybuilding/acting) all excelled in their chosen sport. Additionally, high schools and colleges across the United States field full teams of Deaf athletes, many of which have been promoted on local news programs and ESPN.

Although it is only March, mark your calendars-September is also Deaf Awareness Month where awareness of the language, culture, and diversity of the Deaf community in the United States is celebrated.
