Deaf Culture & the Community: Name Signs and How We Can Use Them

Name signs, also known as sign names, are a unique aspect of Deaf culture and sign languages. They are specific signs used to represent individuals' names within the Deaf community. Name signs are typically assigned to individuals based on certain characteristics or attributes associated with them, such as their physical appearance, personality traits, or notable features.

Name signs serve as a more efficient and convenient way to refer to individuals within the Deaf community, as fingerspelling every letter of a person's name can be time-consuming. Name signs allow for faster communication and help build a sense of identity and belonging within the community.

Here are some key points about name signs:

  1. Assignment: Name signs are usually given to individuals by members of the Deaf community who are fluent in the sign language. It is not something a person chooses for themselves. The process of assigning a name sign may involve discussing the person's characteristics and reaching a consensus among the community members.

  2. Personalization: Name signs are highly personalized and unique to each individual. They are often derived from a characteristic or trait that is distinctive or memorable. For example, a person with curly hair might be given a name sign that represents the shape of curly hair.

  3. Cultural significance: Name signs are an important aspect of Deaf culture and community identity. They signify a person's inclusion and acceptance within the community and are often used in social interactions and conversations.

  4. Etiquette: It is considered respectful to use an individual's name sign when referring to them within the Deaf community. It shows recognition and acknowledgment of their individuality.

  5. Non-Deaf individuals: In some cases, individuals who are not Deaf but are closely associated with the Deaf community may be given name signs. This could include family members, interpreters, or friends who are actively involved in the community.

Name signs vary across different sign languages and Deaf communities around the world. Each community may have its own conventions and rules for assigning and using name signs.

We can use Name Signs with our preverbal, nonverbal, minimally verbal children to identify key members in the family. Check out our social media post from today, June 22nd, 2023 to learn more!
