Fine Motor Skills Development

Fine motor skills are typically thought of as the small movements of the hands and upper extremities. Fine motor skills include acts such as reaching, pinching, grasping, raking or manipulating objects such as a fork or spoon with the hands. These important skills develop from birth through age 5 with multiple stages of milestones in between. While these skills are important for a child to function in daily life some children may have difficulty reaching milestones. As always, we urge parents to recognize that these are not definitive markers for your child and to remember that each child develops at their own pace.

While multiple factors play a role in your child's fine motor ability research has shown how the use of sign language can improve your child's fine motor skills. More importantly, for children who have yet to meet certain milestones, the use of sign language can boost their ability to gain help in activities that require more minute movements and improve their skills overall. Because sign language involves more eye contact, it increases the bond between the parent or caregiver and the child which in turn encourages fine motor skills and improves communication while children are learning to express wants and needs verbally.

The use of baby sign language promotes a multi-sensory approach to learning and isolates small finger movements that help improve dexterity and fine motor skills.
