The ever popular question; “Why do Deaf people talk with their hands?” is always at the forefront for anyone learning Sign Language. For Deaf people, signing is the most natural way of communication and if you really think about it, it is for you as well! Give it some thought, how often do you on a daily basis “facepalm” when your child, partner or coworker does something a little silly or dangerous? I bet it's quite a few times. Or better yet, think about your favorite action movie where the main character is leading a team into battle… do they say; “HEY THE BAD GUYS ARE OVER THERE LET'S SNEAK UP ON THEM!!” No.
They dramatically use their hands to gesticulate where and when to go or even when to be quiet or sit still. Now let's think about more real life situations.
For close to 2 million years, hand signals have been used as a way to relay wants and needs. Early humans were not born with language or the ability to develop it yet, so the most natural way of communication was to use their hands, eyes and facial expressions… sound familiar? Fast forward to the ancient Romans times or closer in time to our indigenous hunters. While they had developed languages, hand signals were still used as a way to communicate, when spoken language was impractical.
So why is signing a choice of communication for Deaf and hearing individuals? Not only is Sign Language is rich with history and culture, it is the most natural form of communication for anyone to use.
