Tips for Communicating with Deaf/deaf/hard of hearing Individuals



There are several ways to communicate with D/deaf people, including using sign language, writing notes, using text messaging or video calls with captions, etc. It's important to ask the person what method they prefer and to be patient and respectful in your communication.



Tip #1 - Basic Communication


Use sign language when communicating with Deaf individuals, or provide written communication if you do not know sign language. Learning basic signs can go a long way! Check out our Simple Signs Posters.


Tip #2 - Lip Reading




Do not shout or speak too loudly when communicating with Deaf individuals, as they may rely on lip-reading. Remember, only 30% of the English language can even be read on lips! This is not the best way to communicate with someone who is Deaf.


Tip #3 - Face-to-face




Make sure to face the Deaf individual directly when speaking to them, as this allows them to see your facial expressions and gestures.
